Mexicans pronounce BMW as

“V e emmee doble uu”

Spanish people say

“Ve emee uvee”

French people say

Ve emm do ble bee ”

BMW is pronounced

“ Bee emm double uu” in English

So, we say “doble u ” instead of “u ve”

Soo... as prononced in Mexico, BMW is an anglicism.... an adaptaion of a term in English... but why?

When I worked for a Japanese company, they pronounced it “beh-em-beh.”

Germans say “bay emm vay”.

Logically, that indicates that the Japanese pick that up from the German “Beh em veh”, despite Japanese Romanization conforming to English pronunciation.

Which, okay, is a really Japaneseishly perverse thing to do.

Bay em-ay doublayvay. (SIC) Is how I say it in my head, to myself, in Spanish.

Locally however, it's sometimes loudly referred to as "You goddamn German piece of shit!"

Chinese it’s “bo mah” in Cantonese, “bao ma” in Mandarin.

Both literally translates to "Treasure Horse" .

I’m surprised about that. Puerto Rico, I’d expect, since their Spanish is full of Anglicizations, but Mexico?

I was reading that it might be an anglicism as I suspected before. Since the direct translation of “double U” is “Doble U"

Well, it seems the RAE has admitted (albeit only in part) a calque from English! Good heavens! Any sources?

Please note that out of sheer laziness in Peninsular Spanish most people read BMW.... as if it were BM V. The correct Spanish name for W is uve doble (or doble uve), and not uve, as one may understand from your previ ous posts. Uve, in Peninsular Spanish, designates the v, also called “ve corta” or “ve chica” outside Spain (or even “ve baja” by Catalan Spanish speakers, for example).
